many years before I was born

in front of which I’d stand mystified by her gaze
though I would find the truth out one day-
I had a dream I went to visit her there
but instead of her portrait stood a mirror
in which I saw she was standing right behind me
which at first completely frightened me
til I realized she had come in love
with a cigarette, puckered lip kiss, and a hug
as my mother later said she always would
From that night on I knew she was always with me
and when I’d judge poorly I’d feel double guilty
til I tripped myself flat, and when I looked up
She wasn’t judging with scorn, but there to help and love
